The annual Senior MasterChef competition at King’s is always a highlight, and this year was no exception.
With just 90 minutes, the challenge was to transform simple ingredients into a three-course masterpiece that would impress our judges. Our Leiths Cookery School buzzed with excitement as senior boarding house teams showcased their culinary prowess, creativity, and teamwork.
This year’s event was generously sponsored and judged by OA and Cotley Inn owner, Maddie Beaumont, with support from Assistant Head Teaching & Learning, Dr Kate Richard.
The Cotley Inn, nestled in the charming village of Wambrook, has been a beloved fixture of rural Somerset since the 17th century. Originally a farmhouse, this traditional yet stylish pub has evolved over the years, becoming a cornerstone of the community.
Ben and Maddie, who took over the Cotley Inn in July 2018, bring a wealth of experience and passion to their roles. Their mission is to offer first-class service in this quaint village pub, creating a welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors from afar.
Eloisa G-B and Poppy G-B from Carpenter House emerged victorious with their exquisite Thai red curry, which was praised for its flawless execution and balanced flavours. Other standout dishes included sweet potato fritters, salmon teriyaki with kiwi salsa and jasmine rice, and a daring steak tartare. All participants demonstrated remarkable cookery skills.
The competition drew enthusiastic support from house parents and supporters, who eagerly sampled the delicious creations. Maddie Beaumont remarked, “The food produced by these talented young chefs was exceptional, showcasing great flavours, textures, and contemporary culinary trends.”
Over the years, the standard of cooking produced during this flagship event has gone from strength to strength thanks to the cookery courses available to King’s pupils.
Here at King’s the younger pupils can choose a cookery option on Friday afternoons, while seniors have the opportunity to pursue the more advanced Leiths Cookery qualification.
We are looking forward to round two next week, where our junior members of the school have the opportunity to take on the same challenge.
