A group of enthusiastic Fourth Form and Fifth Form pupils enjoyed an inspiring academic visit to the University of Oxford this week, gaining first-hand insight into one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.
Accompanied by Mrs Cashmore and Scholars’ Tutor Mr Smith, the trip was designed to introduce pupils to the unique structure of Oxford, including its distinctive and often complex, college and faculty systems, as well as the rich academic opportunities on offer.
The day began with a scenic walk into the city centre, allowing pupils to soak up the atmosphere of Oxford’s historic streets and admire its iconic architecture. Passing through a series of beautiful college and university buildings, the group quickly gained a sense of the heritage and intellectual tradition that defines the university experience.
A highlight of the visit was meeting Old Aluredian Siân Dennett, who is currently studying for a PhD in Mathematics. Siân generously guided the pupils around both her undergraduate college, Balliol, and her current college, Keble. Through this tour, pupils were able to explore the distinct character of different colleges and gain a clearer understanding of how teaching is structured at Oxford, including the tutorial system that underpins its academic model.
Siân also spoke candidly about her own journey to Oxford, offering valuable advice on potential pathways for prospective applicants. Pupils were eager to ask questions, and she shared insights into both the challenges and rewards of university life. In addition to her academic achievements, she spoke about her recent success in rowing, highlighting the wide range of opportunities available beyond the lecture hall.
The group also visited Exeter College, where they were treated to an unexpected highlight, an impromptu piano recital in the chapel. The serene setting provided a memorable cultural moment and showcased another facet of college life. From the college gardens, pupils were also able to enjoy spectacular views across Oxford, including the Radcliffe Camera and All Souls College, further enriching their experience of the city.
After thanking Siân for her time and expertise, the pupils rounded off their visit in true Oxford fashion with a stop at the much-loved G&D’s for ice cream. The relaxed conclusion provided a chance to reflect on an insightful and enjoyable day before beginning the journey home.
The visit offered pupils a valuable glimpse into life at Oxford, combining academic insight with cultural experiences. For many, it served as both a source of inspiration and a tangible reminder of the possibilities that lie ahead.
