Peter Takes to the Commentary Box at Somerset County Cricket Club

For Lower Sixth pupil Peter M, that inspiration has developed into a growing passion for sports commentary and broadcasting following an unforgettable experience at Somerset County Cricket Club. 

What began as an invitation to take part in a short five-minute question-and-answer session with former Somerset cricketer Peter Trego quickly became something much more. Sitting in the commentary box during a live-streamed match at the County Ground, Peter found himself immersed in the world of professional sports broadcasting. 

“Before I knew it, an hour had passed,” he said. “I was calling the play and commentating on the match. It was an incredible experience, I had so much fun.” 

The opportunity gave Peter a unique insight into the fast-paced world of live media and opened his eyes to a career path he is now seriously considering. 

“The team were so friendly and made me feel really welcome,” he explained. “It’s definitely something I want to explore further.” 

A Conversation That Changed Everything 

Peter’s interest in commentary and journalism was further inspired by one of King’s Meet the Experts careers events, organised by Mrs Lewis, Head of Futures. 

Designed to connect pupils with professionals from a wide range of industries, these events form part of the school’s commitment to helping pupils make informed decisions about their futures. Through conversations with people who have successfully navigated their own career journeys, pupils gain authentic insights that simply cannot be found in a classroom. 

It was at one such event that Peter met Old Aluredian Oli Cox, founder of his own journalism company. 

Listening to Oli discuss his own route into journalism and broadcasting, Peter recognised a path that closely reflected his own interests and ambitions. 

“It felt like a path I could really see myself following,” he said. “It was inspiring to hear how he got there.” 

That conversation proved to be far more than a networking opportunity. It gave Peter confidence, direction and a clearer vision of what his future might look like. 

It is also a powerful example of the strength of the Old Aluredian community.  

One of the greatest advantages of a King’s education is the lifelong connection pupils share with the school. Time and again, former pupils return to support the next generation, sharing their expertise, opening doors and inspiring young people to pursue their ambitions. 

There is something particularly special about seeing former King’s pupils, now successful in their own careers, choose to give back in this way. Their willingness to be part of current pupils’ journeys demonstrates the enduring bonds that define the King’s community and highlights the power of being an Old Aluredian. 

Learning Beyond the Classroom 

Inspired by the Meet the Experts event, Peter sought out further opportunities to explore the industry, securing work experience in both cricket and National Hunt racing commentary. 

The placements provided valuable hands-on experience of live broadcasting and allowed him to develop the skills required to think quickly, communicate effectively and engage an audience in real time. 

The experience has not only strengthened his confidence but has also given him a clearer sense of direction as he considers future opportunities in media, journalism and broadcasting. 

As he begins to explore his post-18 options, Peter is considering studying English at university, combining his academic interests with his passion for sport and communication.

Reflecting on the opportunities he has received, Peter believes King’s has played a significant role in helping him discover and develop his ambitions. 

“The King’s community is unique,” he said. “Because it’s not a huge school, everyone knows each other. The atmosphere is really friendly and personable, and the teaching is very individual. Teachers understand your needs and help you develop.”

“King’s gives pupils real insight into different careers and helps you think about what you might want to do in the future,” Peter said. “You hear directly from people working in those industries, which is invaluable.” 

A Passion Supported by Cricket 

Peter’s love of commentary is closely connected to his passion for cricket, a sport that plays a significant role in life at King’s. 

The school boasts a thriving cricket programme, with strong boys’ and girls’ teams competing at a high level throughout the summer term. 

“We can field four competitive boys’ teams at senior level, and strong girls’ teams,” Peter said. “The standard is really high.” 

Cricket is visible throughout the school site, with the First XI pitch at its heart, creating an atmosphere that is enjoyed by the wider school community. 

Excellent facilities, including a dedicated cricket centre with multiple practice lanes and fielding areas, provide pupils with opportunities to refine their skills, while a busy fixture schedule ensures plenty of competitive experience. 

Looking Ahead 

As Peter prepares to enter Upper Sixth, he is determined to make the most of every opportunity available to him during his final year at King’s. Alongside pursuing his growing interest in journalism and broadcasting, he has recently been appointed Deputy Head Boy. This role will further develop the leadership, communication and interpersonal skills that will serve him well both at university and throughout his future career. 

His experience at Somerset County Cricket Club has given him not only invaluable practical experience but also a clearer understanding of where his talents and interests may lead. 

“Commentary is something I really enjoy,” he said. “Being able to combine sport with communication and media is exciting. It’s something I want to pursue.” 

Peter’s journey reflects the opportunities that are possible when young people are encouraged to explore their interests and supported to pursue them. Through expert careers guidance, dedicated staff, enriching experiences and the strength of the Old Aluredian network, King’s helps pupils develop the confidence, skills and connections to take their next steps with ambition.
