The summer term here at King’s College, Taunton, concluded with a vibrant and creative Arts Week, showcasing the incredible talents of our pupils across various disciplines. The three-day-long celebration was filled with performances, exhibitions, and creative displays.
Junior Play ‘The Railway Children’
The week kicked off in the amphitheatre with the Junior Play, ‘The Railway Children,’ performed by our talented pupils in the Third and Fourth Form. The highlight of the evening was the real-life steam train and track, adding an authentic touch to the beloved classic.
Performing Arts Evening
Tuesday evening was dedicated to the performing arts, featuring a diverse selection of performances from our pupils across all year groups. The audience was treated to an array of monologues, scenes from plays, dances, and singing, each showcasing the unique talents of our pupils.
Creative Showcase and Summer Music Concert
The Creative Showcase held in the Silvermead Studio, was an exhibition featuring stunning art and design technology projects, accompanied by the smooth sounds of a jazz band. Guests enjoyed canapés and fizz as they admired the creative works on display.
GCSE art pupils completed their course with two projects titled ‘Identity’ and ‘Past, Present, Future’. Their third exam project was on the theme of ‘Gathering’. For all projects, they researched different artists relating to their themes and explored their work further through a variety of mediums. Finally, they created final pieces to show the realisation of their creative intentions.
A Level art pupils completed an initial project to workshop various skills before moving into the Personal Investigation part of their coursework. By coming up with individual themes, each student was able to move in a unique creative direction, experimenting with the ideas, contexts and mediums they were drawn to. Their final project on the theme of ‘Union’ saw them developing their work towards impressive final pieces, created during a 15 hour practical exam.
This year’s exhibition features a selection of outstanding Design & Technology projects created by GCSE and A-level pupils. The GCSE projects primarily focused on space-saving solutions and personalised storage. Each pupil identified a specific need or challenge related to organisation and storage in compact environments, such as school dormitories or small living spaces. Their projects included affordable sports equipment, modular drying solutions, bespoke jewellery boxes, retro-themed furniture, and specialised storage units for various hobbies and interests.
The A-level projects were more diverse, each tailored to the pupils’ personal interests and future career aspirations. These projects aimed to address specific real-world challenges through innovative design.
The evening culminated in the Summer Music Concert, with performances from the Big King’s Band and other talented pupils, highlighting their musical prowess and bringing the week to a grand finale. Thank you to the PFA for sponsoring the Creative Showcase.
Arts Week was a resounding success, celebrating the artistic achievements of our pupils and providing a platform for them to shine. Well done to all who performed and exhibited.
