King’s College Prep Year 6 Captivates Audiences with a Magical Modern Take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The stage of the King’s College Prep Performing Arts Centre came alive this week as Year 6 pupils delivered three show‑stopping performances of a modern interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With every pupil in the year group taking part and several bravely stepping into multiple roles, the production showcased the exceptional depth of talent within the school’s Performing Arts department.
Under the inspired direction of Head of Drama, Lisa Keirle, the beloved Shakespearean comedy was transformed into a colourful, laughter‑filled adventure. Mrs Keirle’s script cleverly blended Shakespeare’s poetic language with contemporary humour, while the choreography brought an energy and polish that would not have looked out of place on a West End stage. Exquisite costumes, bursting with character and detail, drew gasps of delight as they transported the audience into the magical realm of fairies, lovers and mischievous sprites.
In her Director’s Note, Mrs Keirle described “a play full of mayhem, magic and madness,” adding that the same could be said of the joyful weeks of rehearsal. She spoke of an “exciting Shakespearean journey of discovery,” particularly for pupils encountering the beautiful poetic language for the first time. Acknowledging the complexities of the production with its large cast, intricate plot, songs, dances and short scenes, she captured the heart of the play, describing it as one that asks the audience “to suspend your disbelief, to allow your imagination to take you into a mystical world where nothing is quite as it seems.” Her hope was that the audience would take that journey with the cast and “enjoy our dream as much as we have” a wish that was undeniably fulfilled.
After months of rehearsal, dedication and teamwork, the pupils, aged just 10 and 11 delivered a performance that set the stage alight with confidence and emotion. Tackling Shakespeare is no small undertaking at any age, yet the young cast rose to the challenge with remarkable maturity. Their delivery was expressive and heartfelt, revealing several emerging shining stars of the future.
The musical elements were equally breathtaking. Songs were performed with conviction and blended beautifully with the storytelling, adding depth and warmth to the emotional core of the production. The staging itself was striking; the set was the quality of a professional paid for production. Impressive lighting design and expertly timed music cues also created an immersive atmosphere that held the audience captivate from beginning to end.
This outstanding performance was a true reflection of the strength of the Performing Arts department at King’s College Prep, a school widely celebrated for its commitment to nurturing creativity, confidence and expressive skills.
As the final applause filled the theatre, it was clear that this talented group of Prep pupils had created something truly unforgettable.
