Earlier this term, Fourth Form Pippa S embarked on an unforgettable cricket exchange trip to South Africa, organised by King’s as part of the schools commitment to providing unique sporting opportunities for pupils. Flying solo for the first time, Pippa embraced the independence and confidence that came with her exchange, settling quickly into life with her host family.
The purpose of the exchange was to enhance her cricketing skills and experience the game in a completely different environment. Pippa trained extensively at the school, benefiting from their different coaching styles. She also joined cricket tours during her weeks away, competing against local teams and earning the prestigious title of “Most Wickets Taken” in one of the tournaments, a remarkable achievement and her personal highlight of the trip.
Beyond cricket, Pippa immersed herself in South African culture. She attended lessons that were very different from those at King’s, describing them as “fascinating and eye-opening.” Her days off were filled with unforgettable experiences, including visits to Table Mountain and Boulders Beach, home to the famous penguins.
Reflecting on her journey, Pippa said:
“This experience was amazing for me, not just for my cricket, but for the independence and social skills I gained. I learned so much on the pitch, picking up tips I can bring back to King’s. It was a privilege to be part of this exchange.”
She summed up the experience in three words: “Amazing, a learning experience, and incredible.” Her advice to anyone considering an exchange would be to “Embrace the opportunity if you get the chance, it’s something you’ll never forget.”
As part of her development pathway, Pippa also trains with Somerset alongside her King’s programme. Throughout her time away, King’s provided academic support, with her tutor checking in regularly to ensure she was getting on okay, managing her workload and staying on track.
The exchange doesn’t end here as Isi, Pippa’s South African counterpart, will visit King’s in May to complete the second half of this exciting partnership. We look forward to welcoming her and continuing this enriching cultural and sporting exchange.
