We were delighted to welcome our artists from Year 7 and Year 8 at King’s Prep to the College for a dedicated Art Workshop. These pupils are either part of the Spec Art programme or are beginning to explore the possibility of applying for future art scholarships. The workshop offered them a valuable insight into how art develops at the College and what their artistic journey could look like in the years ahead.
Exploring the Silvermead Studio
Pupils enjoyed a tour of the Silvermead Studio, where they were able to see A Level workstations up close. This gave them a real feel for the working environment of older pupils and the level of independence, experimentation, and ambition encouraged in their artwork. They also viewed a range of stunning A Level pieces created this year, which definitely inspired plenty of “wow” moments.
Meeting GCSE Art Pupils
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to speak with current GCSE Art pupils. Our Prep pupils asked thoughtful questions about what studying art at GCSE is really like, from the workload to the creative freedom, and gained valuable first-hand insight into the next stage of the art journey.
Hands-on Creative Workshop
The practical activity focused on landscape drawing, giving pupils the chance to experiment with a variety of techniques, materials, and media. They began with charcoal, comparing the effects of soft versus lighter charcoal, before moving on to create a second piece using different materials to layer different aspects of the landscapes. The session finished with pupils adding colour to enhance depth and expression. The variety of materials encouraged them to be bold, explore texture, and think about landscape in a more abstract, interpretive way.
Creativity and Possibility
The pupils had a fantastic day, throwing themselves into each task with enthusiasm. It was a pleasure to welcome them into the College’s creative spaces and show them the breadth of artistic opportunities available.
We hope the experience has sparked new ideas, confidence, and excitement about where their artistic skills might take them in the future.
