The importance of art in the curriculum cannot be overstated and here at King’s College Prep, we believe that art is essential for cultivating creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression in our pupils.
Recently, our Year 8 pupils completed a remarkable project inspired by Barbara Hepworth, one of Britain’s most renowned sculptors. They explored a variety of techniques, starting with 2D sketches and experimenting with 3D forms using soap, before finalising their sculptures with cardboard and mod-roc. The results, proudly displayed in the dining hall, are a testament to their hard work and artistic talent.
The project has been enriched by videos of Hepworth’s life and her sculpture garden, shown in class. One of our Year 8 pupils even shared that their grandmother knew Hepworth personally, leading to wider classroom discussion and forging deeper connections for the pupils to really explore the artist’s work.
The vibrant, colourful Hepworth-inspired sculptures have recently become the focal point of much discussion amongst the school community, highlighting the powerful influence of the study of art here ta King’s. As we begin our new project tomorrow exploring Andy Warhol’s repeated patterns and building on last term’s James Rosenquist-inspired photomontages, we continue our creative journey through the world of artists. This ongoing exploration is central to our aim of nurturing our pupils’ creativity and appreciation for the arts.
Thanks to our inspiring teachers and art program, our pupils develop their creativity and independent ideas in a fun and supportive environment. It’s true to say that our art room is where the magic happens, laying the foundations for a bright and creative future.
