Prep Why King’s at Year 7

We are a wonderfully ambitious co-educational independent school offering both day and boarding school places for pupils aged 2-18, in the heart of Somerset.

A Prep Environment That Goes Further Than the Standard Curriculum

King’s Prep provides a warm, ambitious and supportive setting where pupils thrive academically, socially and personally. With small classes and specialist teachers, pupils benefit from personalised attention during the most crucial developmental years.

The Ideal Step After Year 6

Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoy becoming leaders at the top of Prep, forming strong friendships before joining the larger Senior School, and taking on greater responsibility within a nurturing environment. They also benefit from a gradual transition from primary-style teaching to specialist subject learning, helping them grow in confidence and maturity. Together, these experiences create grounded, well-prepared pupils ready for the next stage of their educational journey.

Join us for our next Open Day taking place on Friday, 5 June

A two-year programme preparing pupils for life, not just exams.

Starting in Year 7, every pupil participates in the Future Ready Programme, designed around future ready skills.

Confidence & Communication

Pupils develop confidence and communication skills through carefully designed experiences that run throughout the Future Ready Programme. They regularly practise speaking in front of others through activities such as daily moments to “stand and share,” opportunities that help them refine body language, eye contact and attentive listening. More structured experiences, including public speaking, debate, presentations and performance, allow pupils to build their skills gradually as their assurance grows. Small class discussion encourages every child to contribute their ideas, while both formal and informal leadership opportunities help them take ownership of their voice and role within a group. Over time, and certainly by the end of Year 8, these experiences help pupils become articulate, confident communicators who feel comfortable expressing themselves in a wide range of situations.

Resilience & Character

Pupils gently build resilience and strength of character through thoughtful experiences woven throughout the Future Ready Programme. They encounter manageable moments of challenge, such as preparing for short presentations, taking part in performance-style activities or working through open-ended academic tasks, which help them learn how to stay calm under pressure and keep trying when something feels difficult. Teachers guide pupils in reflecting on how they respond to setbacks, drawing on the programme’s emphasis on growth, self-awareness and understanding their own learning process. Cross-disciplinary activities that encourage pupils to think differently, along with opportunities to adapt their ideas when a first attempt does not work, help them develop flexibility and perseverance. Over time, these structured but supportive experiences enable pupils to feel increasingly confident in themselves and ready to approach new or unfamiliar situations with a positive, resilient mindset.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Pupils develop their critical thinking skills through thoughtfully designed activities that encourage curiosity, creativity and independent thought. Open-ended tasks invite them to explore different possibilities rather than search for a single “right” answer, helping them become comfortable with thinking more deeply and imaginatively. Cross-disciplinary projects allow them to connect ideas from different subjects, showing them how to look at challenges from fresh perspectives. Teachers guide pupils through gentle thinking routines such as asking why something happens, what might happen next or how they could improve an idea, which helps them learn how to approach problems calmly and constructively. Over time, pupils begin to enjoy the process of exploring, questioning and testing their ideas, developing a confident mindset that will serve them well far beyond the classroom.

Financial Literacy & Real-World Readiness

Pupils begin developing practical life skills that help them understand money, value and everyday decision making in an age-appropriate way. They explore the difference between needs and wants, think about how to make thoughtful spending choices and learn the basics of budgeting in simple, manageable steps. As they progress through the programme, they are introduced to key ideas such as saving, the purpose of tax and how insurance helps protect people from risk. They also look at real life examples like reading a basic bank statement, understanding incomings and outgoings and beginning to make sense of the financial responsibilities they will encounter later in life. These foundations give pupils a reassuring sense of independence and help them build confidence in navigating the world beyond school.

Digital Fluency & Technology

Pupils strengthen their digital confidence through regular use of technology embedded across the Future Ready Programme. They build practical research skills by learning how to evaluate information online and check the reliability of digital sources, an approach supported by lessons that introduce them to effective online research and source analysis. Coding, which is taught from Year 3 onwards, continues to develop throughout Years 7 and 8, helping pupils understand logic, pattern recognition and the digital thinking that underpins many future careers. The programme also encourages pupils to develop a healthy relationship with technology, guiding them in how to navigate the online world safely and thoughtfully. Because many Future Ready tasks require pupils to apply their IT skills independently, they grow comfortable using digital tools for research, presentations and project development. Throughout the programme pupils develop essential digital literacy skills needed for everyday life in real world scenarios, both at home and in the workplace.

Independence & Decision Making

As the programme develops, pupils increasingly take ownership of their learning, their routines, and the choices they make within the Future Ready Programme. They are encouraged to manage aspects of their own workload, plan their time effectively and take responsibility for completing elements of longer projects, building confidence in their ability to stay organised. The programme invites pupils to make personal choices, such as selecting activities or areas of focus that interest them, giving them space to explore their own preferences and strengths. Practical life skills tasks, which they complete independently at home using the programme’s bronze, silver and gold milestones, help pupils experience small but meaningful achievements that foster self-reliance. These experiences, together with opportunities to take on age-appropriate responsibilities within the school community, gently guide pupils toward making thoughtful decisions and standing more confidently on their own two feet.

Wellbeing & Self-Awareness

Wellbeing sits at the heart of the Future Ready Programme and is intentionally woven through pupils’ daily experiences to help them understand what balance truly feels like. Pupils take part in age-appropriate activities designed to support their physical and emotional health, including morning movement options, lunchtime runs and opportunities to be active throughout the day. These moments encourage pupils to reset, build healthy routines and learn what helps them stay calm, focused and ready to learn. Supported by dedicated sports professionals, pupils experience wellbeing in a way that is practical, enjoyable and fully embedded within school life. And what better way to nurture this balance than within our expansive 50 acre site, where open playing fields and woodland areas give pupils the space to breathe, explore and enjoy time outdoors. Alongside this, the programme encourages regular reflection, helping pupils recognise their progress, understand their emotions and build a positive sense of self. Over time, these experiences help pupils develop emotional intelligence, confidence and sustainable habits that will support them long after they leave Prep.

Why King’s Prep Stands Out From Other Independent Schools

A Unique Two Year Upper Prep Model Offering Depth Beyond the Standard Curriculum

While many schools transition pupils into senior structures too early, King’s gives Year 7 and 8 pupils the space, support and focus they need to grow confidently.

The depth of learning at King’s goes far beyond what is typically offered in a prep school, and much of this is driven by the Future Ready Programme. Financial literacy, digital fluency, careers awareness and real-world learning are deliberately built into pupils’ experiences from Year 7, giving them early exposure to the skills and understanding they will rely on as they grow. Whether they are learning how money works, applying digital research skills, exploring future career paths or working on projects that connect classroom learning to the wider world, these elements form an integral part of their development. Because they are embedded throughout the programme, pupils begin to see these skills not as extras but as an essential and natural part of their education.

Leadership Opportunities That Set Pupils Up for Success

Year 7 and 8 pupils step naturally into leadership as the oldest in the Prep community. They enjoy meaningful responsibilities, mentoring opportunities and increased independence, supported by features such as the dedicated Year 8 common room and elements of the Future Ready Programme that encourage pupils to lead, contribute and take ownership. These experiences help them grow in confidence and prepare them for the transition to Senior School.

A Seamless Move to King’s College at Year 9

Prepared, Confident and Ready to Thrive

Joining King’s in Year 7 means stepping into a warm, connected community where pupils quickly feel known and supported. Although they move to King’s College in Year 9, the transition feels completely natural because pupils spend two years becoming familiar with the ethos, expectations and wider King’s environment. King’s Prep prepares them carefully for this next step, and the vast majority progress to the Senior School with ease, helped by the close relationship between the two schools and the consistent pastoral and academic support they receive throughout their Prep journey.
