Dance
OVERVIEW
Studying many different genre and combinations of dance styles, pupils will develop their understanding of modern and classical dance. The high emphasis on performance means that pupils taking Dance GCSE are likely to be heavily involved in our many Performing Arts showcase events.
OUR SYLLABUS
The course covers three key aspects: performance, choreography and a written dance appreciation exam. Pupils are encouraged to explore their creative side through the performance section, with two set phrases, a solo performance and a duo/trio.
Those who are more excited by choreography will enjoy the 30% of the final mark devoted to that aspect, with a requirement to choreograph a solo or group dance for up to five dancers. Finally, the written paper covers dance choreography, safe working practice and the analysis of six professional set works. In addition, pupils will be required to undertake a critical analysis of their own work as part of the exam.
WHY STUDY DANCE?
Dance provides a perfect combination of creativity and physical health. Studying dance requires pupils to work collaboratively and remain curious about what is possible and what works best. There are clear cognitive benefits from learning steps and moves, and of course the benefits to one’s own mental health from dance cannot be underestimated.
Academically, the subject blends the ability to be creative and practical with the development of critical analysis; skills that all employers value highly.
There are many opportunities to experience fabulous dance performances in the local areas and we have recently been to Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake as well as attending dance productions in Bristol or Plymouth.
Dance students will often participate in local and regional competitions and performances. We offer LAMDA qualifications and many pupils excel in these, achieving gold awards for their performances.
