Chemistry

OVERVIEW

From the models of the smallest particles of matter to the environmental arguments surrounding how best to manage Earth’s resources, GSCE Chemistry has something for every aspiring scientist to engage with.

The Chemistry department aims to inform and challenge pupils of all year groups in a safe, positive learning environment. Pupils are encouraged to think independently, and our aim is to provide them with the skills they need to succeed, not only in their exams and further education, but in everyday life.

OUR SYLLABUS

For chemistry, pupils follow either the AQA GCSE Chemistry or AQA GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy course. Both courses offer a wide range of topics that provide a solid foundation for A-level chemistry study.

We recognise that pupils thrive when they are immersed in their studies, and, to that end, practical investigation forms an integral part of the curriculum at King’s. From diffusion experiments at the beginning of Year 9, our pupils are guaranteed to gain hands-on experience of the subject in modern and well-equipped laboratories.

Under the AQA syllabus, we cover the following fascinating Chemistry topics:

  • Atomic structure and the periodic table
  • Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter
  • Quantitative chemistry
  • Chemical changes
  • Energy changes
  • The rate and extent of chemical change
  • Organic chemistry
  • Chemical analysis
  • Chemistry of the atmosphere
  • Using resources

WHY STUDY CHEMISTRY?

Chemistry lies at the heart of all science, providing the link between the world of subatomic physics and molecular cell biology. Realise it or not, deep down we are all chemists. Every time we cook a meal, take a breath, or light a match, we perform a chemical reaction.

It is difficult to think of a product introduced in recent times that did not require the innovation of a chemist at some stage in its production.

From the invention of plastics to the production of pharmaceuticals and the development of new energy sources, chemists have played a pivotal role in shaping the modern world.

A Year 10 visit to Science Live! at Bristol Beacon – a multi-science lecture day: the chance to see and hear five of Britain’s top scientists, all working at the cutting edge of their specialisms.

Pupils have the opportunity to explore their scientific interests further through Junior Science club, which enables topics to be revisited and usually involves engaging experiments!
