Duke of Edinburgh
Awards Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a globally recognised programme aimed at young people, focusing on personal development and encouraging self-reliance, leadership, and adventure.

At King’s, we offer all three levels of achievement: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Bronze level is offered to all Year 9 pupils and takes a minimum of six months to complete. The Silver award is offered to our Year 10 pupils; and Sixth Form pupils can start a Gold programme, which will take a minimum of 18 months.

Our pupils will develop their skills in:

  • Volunteering: Participants must commit to a period of volunteer work, which helps develop a sense of responsibility, community engagement, and personal satisfaction.
  • Physical activities: Participants choose an activity to improve their physical fitness and wellbeing, such as sports, dancing, or fitness training.
  • New hobbies: This section focuses on learning and developing a new skill or hobby, which could include anything from music and art to coding or languages.
  • Exploring and expeditions: A key component of the award, participants plan, prepare for, and undertake a challenging outdoor expedition, promoting teamwork, navigation, and problem-solving in real-world settings.
  • Residential (Gold level only): This additional section involves spending time away from home, participating in an activity that challenges personal development, like volunteering or working on a project in a new environment.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award helps participants build resilience, learn new skills, and gain confidence, while also offering valuable recognition for personal growth and achievement. It’s widely respected by universities, employers, and organisations around the world.
