Latin
OVERVIEW
In this course, we study the language, culture and history of Ancient Rome, whilst developing many of the linguistic and grammatical skills that underpin both English and other modern foreign languages.
OUR SYLLABUS
We offer Latin to all pupils who join in Year 9, whether they have previously studied it or not. We use a newly developed course, Suburani, which teaches the Latin language by looking at the lives of people living in the Subura of Rome in the mid-1st Century. Through them, we also learn about aspects of life in different parts of the empire as the characters tell of their experiences in Britain, France, Spain and Greece.
At GCSE, we follow the Eduqas syllabus, which requires pupils to not only study the translation of Latin but also to read selections of literature on various themes. This is continued at A-level where pupils further develop their knowledge of Latin grammar and read a wider selection of original texts in more depth, following the OCR syllabus.
WHY STUDY LATIN?
Latin is a subject like no other – whilst opening a door into a world so familiar yet so different to our own, it also develops excellent transferable skills in language, logic and reasoning.
We offer visits to Roman sites within the UK such as Caerleon and Bath, and occasional trips to visit Rome and Pompeii.
We join online lectures provided by Classics For All and have regularly attended other suitable lectures at local universities.
Latin is an excellent preparation for being able to read critically and to write accurately. It also improves logic and how to pay close attention to detail – essential for skills required in careers in law, project management, journalism and computer science.
