English as an Additional Language (EAL)
OVERVIEW
International pupils are assessed pre- and post-entry, and, where suitable, provided support in using English as an additional language.
This support comes through timetabled lessons and/or through lunchtime clinics. Timetabled EAL lessons take the place of MFL lessons, or in place of one or two GCSE options.
OUR SYLLABUS
We tailor our provision for each individual pupils, but most will follow Cambridge English courses (from B1 preliminary to C1 advanced). Pupils will then progress onto taking the First language UKVI IELTS exams, which are now demanded by universities.
Pupils at GCSE level will have the opportunity to take either first language English (if their skills are of the required level) or English as a Second Language.
WHY STUDY ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE?
EAL support can improve all grades, prepare pupils for academic writing after school, and help with social integration and adapting to studying in another language. Pupils will not only learn about the language but also deepen their cultural understanding.
It cannot be underestimated how important language learning is to enhance pupils’ developing friendships and enjoying social situations. These then will filter through to greater fulfilment in their academic learning.
The EAL department organises regular trips to London and Cardiff for the UKVI IELTS Academic, an essential exam for those wishing to pursue English-speaking university opportunities.
Pupils also have many opportunities, through our activity programme, to explore the local area and learn more about UK culture. Particular highlights are the annual trip to Bath, to explore the Roman history and wonderful city, and shopping trips to Exeter and Cribbs Causeway.
Learning English is not the only skill developed through our EAL courses. Pupils learn to be more socially confident, develop their cultural awareness and understanding, and enhance their problem-solving and communication skills.
