Geography

OVERVIEW

Geography at King’s Prep is a dynamic subject, where students explore the relationship between people and the environments in which they live.

From Pre-Prep through to Year 8, pupils develop a growing understanding of their local, national, and global surroundings. Topics span from studying the home address, Taunton, and the British Isles in Year 1 to learning the location of 46 countries and their capitals in Years 7 and 8, in line with the Common Entrance Geography syllabus.

Pupils cover a range of exciting topics, including coastal studies, weather patterns, food origins, Kenya, map skills, rainforests, deserts, the structure of the Earth, environmental issues, rivers, transport, industry, population, and sustainability.

OUR SYLLABUS

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for Geography at Key Stage 1 and 2 and the ISEB Common Entrance syllabus for Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8).

WHY STUDY GEOGRAPHY?

Geography is the study of both people and the world around us. It engages pupils in thinking about the way we live and where we live, encouraging them to ask questions like: Why do we live in Taunton? Is the British Isles shrinking? Why is Mount Everest getting taller? Are cars sustainable? Why do rivers flood?

Geography helps students understand the world and the impact of human activity on it. It fosters curiosity about the environment, encouraging pupils to ask questions and seek answers.

Field trips are an essential part of Geography at King’s Prep, providing opportunities for pupils to apply their learning in real-world contexts. These include trips to Weston-super-Mare beach, Exmoor National Park, North Curry village, Lulworth Cove, Whatley Quarry, a local farm, and a river study on the Quantock Hills.

Through our enrichment programme, we run cross-curricular projects with the Science department, linking geographic and environmental topics with scientific inquiry.

Geography develops a range of soft skills, such as critical thinking, empathy, global awareness, and problem-solving. As technology and transportation bring the world closer together, understanding different cultures and the impact of human actions on the planet has never been more important. Geography helps pupils become informed, thoughtful citizens who are aware of the world around them.
