Art

OVERVIEW

Pupils explore a wide range of artists, movements, techniques, and media. Through various projects, they extend their understanding of colour theory, observational skills, design stages, scale, perspective, figures, optical illusions, symmetry, and work in both 2D and 3D. They also develop critical and contextual skills, making informed connections to different cultures and countries.

OUR SYLLABUS

The art curriculum embraces a broad range of artists and styles, from modern and contemporary to historical movements. It aims to contextualise works, fostering passion for the visual world and connecting the past and present.

Pupils are introduced to various techniques and materials, including felt-making, sculpting, printing, pen and ink studies, digital manipulations, painting, drawing, and more.

WHY STUDY ART?

Art gives pupils the opportunity to develop their creativity and independent ideas in a fun and supportive environment. We encourage individuals to explore new ways of working, find a style that suits them, and build on their skills across multiple disciplines. Art is also key to mental health, mindfulness, and self-expression – our art room is where the magic happens!

  • Specialist art trip
  • Cross-curricular trips with History, English, and Drama
  • Independent visits to museums and galleries for Year 8

The department offers pupils in Years 7-8 the chance to join the Specialist Art group, where they work towards an enhanced portfolio. We welcome visiting artists and encourage cross-curricular projects, including competitions and PSHE activities. Also, the sketch club and junior craft club.

Art fosters independent thinking, problem-solving, mindfulness, communication, adaptability, and creativity. We emphasise the importance of working both independently and in pairs or groups, encouraging self-assessment and reflection on progress.
