Prep THE ARTS
THE ARTS AT KING’S PREP
Here at King’s Prep we pride ourselves on our outstanding arts teaching and facilities.
Each of these departments benefit from their own specialist areas within the school, including exceptional, purpose-built facilities such as a wonderful Arts Centre, individual music practice rooms, and dedicated equipment and rooms for art and design technology.
Of course, we also have outstanding staff. Each department has a specialist teacher with infectious enthusiasm and passion for their specific arts field. The music department also offers additional lessons with extra staff for a wide variety of instruments, while drama benefits from our committed speech and drama teacher.
ART
We run a specialist Art Group for Year 7 and 8 and we also run an Arts Week for the pupils and are delighted to welcome visiting artists for these events.
MUSIC
We offer a full and varied programme of musical opportunities.
Pupils can join our school choir by audition from Year 5. In addition to our main choir, we also offer Pyrland Choir, which is open to all children in Years 3, 4, and 5.
There are plenty of music groups to participate in – Jazz Group, Guitar Group and House Music to name a few.
Our Formal Autumn and Spring concerts are very popular and provide a wonderful showcase for our musicians. Pupils can also perform at a prizegiving event and a programme of smaller informal concerts. Students also take part in the annual carol service as well as the School Big Band Day with Senior School.
DRAMA
Children in Year 4, Year 6, and Year 7 and 8 participate in performances, giving them the chance to showcase their skills in front of an audience.
Recent productions include Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oliver, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
DANCE
Pupils also have the opportunity to study ballet, and enjoy learning flamenco dancing in Arts Week.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
Design Technology is an inherently creative subject, allowing students to develop and bring their own ideas to life. In a world where instant gratification is often just a click away, the empowerment that comes from designing and making something unique is immeasurable
Learning skills in this area is a great opportunity for pupils who benefit from a Specialist DT Group for Year 7 and Year 8. We also run cookery sessions on Saturday mornings.
