Pastoral Care

Safe, supported, valued: Our exceptional pastoral care.

At King’s College Prep, we believe that all young children thrive when they feel safe, supported, and valued.

That’s why pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that your child feels a sense of belonging, encouragement, and guidance throughout their time with us.

With around 240 pupils, our close-knit school community allows us to truly know each child as an individual, fostering strong relationships between pupils, teachers, and parents.

ONE BIG FAMILY

Our pastoral care is built around a deep understanding of the needs of young children.

We know that childhood is a time of growth, curiosity, and learning – not just academically, but emotionally and socially too. So we nurture every aspect of a child’s development, giving them the confidence to explore and the courage to take risks and discover their full potential.

This supportive environment of teachers and peers encourages kindness, respect, and inclusivity.

At the core of our pastoral care is our tutor system, which ensures that every child has a dedicated mentor looking out for their wellbeing and progress: from Years 3- 8, each pupil is assigned a tutor, who acts as their first point of contact for both academic and personal matters.

King's Taunton Prep School

Tutors monitor each child’s academic progress, social development, and emotional wellbeing, ensuring that they are happy and engaged.

Tutors often teach their pupils in multiple subjects, deepening their understanding of each child’s strengths, challenges, and aspirations.

Tutors serve as the vital link between school and home, keeping parents informed and working collaboratively to support each child’s needs.

As pupils progress into Years 5-8, they remain part of their tutor group but have the opportunity to mix with different classmates in academic lessons. This balance provides the security of a familiar tutor while also encouraging new friendships and experiences.

Of course, education at King’s extends far beyond the classroom. We believe in developing confident, well-rounded individuals who embrace challenges, take responsibility, and build resilience.

For example, every child is involved in our annual school productions, whether performing on stage, managing backstage elements, or working on technical aspects. And, starting in Year 4, pupils take part in residential trips that encourage them to step outside their comfort zones to develop independence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of adventure.

A STRONG PUPIL VOICE

We believe that children should have a voice in their own education. Our Pupil Council meets regularly to discuss ideas for school improvements and new initiatives, and pupils take the lead in organising charity events.

By giving children real responsibilities, we help them develop confidence, decision-making skills, and a strong sense of community at any early age.

OUR INCLUSIVE & NURTURING COMMUNITY

We’re proud to be an inclusive school that celebrates diversity and supports every child’s unique needs. Our Learning Strategies team provides tailored support for children who may need additional help.

Whether through one-on-one sessions, in-class support, or small group workshops, we ensure that every child has the resources they need to succeed.

Our small school size allows us to closely monitor each child’s progress, ensuring that support is tailored, responsive, and truly effective. Parents and teachers work in partnership to create the best possible outcomes:

By fostering strong relationships, celebrating individuality, and providing the right support at the right time, a King’s Prep education will enable your child to develop into a resilient, confident, and happy learner.
