Latin

OVERVIEW

Latin is the foundation of many modern languages, especially the Romance languages. It also enhances pupils’ understanding of English, as many English words are derived from Latin.

OUR SYLLABUS

All pupils study Classical Civilization in Year 6. Latin is then introduced to the top sets in Years 7 and 8, where pupils gain a solid grounding in the basics of grammar, including noun declensions and verb tenses.

This allows them to confidently translate from Latin to English, while also developing an understanding of the language’s structure.

WHY STUDY LATIN?

The logical nature of Latin helps develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing pupils for further academic challenges.

In addition to language study, Latin at King’s Prep provides pupils with insights into Roman history, culture, and mythology, offering a deeper understanding of the Mediterranean civilizations that shaped modern Western society.

Latin is a logical subject, which teaches pupils to problem-solve, reason and persevere through a problem. In lessons, pupils are encouraged to collaborate, communicate with their peers and are given the confidence to share their work with the class.
