ARTS WEEK – THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
Event Date: 29 June
Event Times: 7:15pm
Event Description:
As part of Arts Week, join us at King’s for our take on this classic production.
While the script delights in sending up the conventions of the classic detective story, the mystery at its heart remains every bit as gripping, and the friendship between Holmes and Watson as endearing as ever.
Where some productions rely on swirling fog, sprawling sets, and fearsome beasts to bring the moor to life, we asked ourselves how much of that could be conjured within the amphitheatre. Where others may have leaned on grandeur and gothic spectacle, it is hoped that theatrical invention, quick wit, and a touch of nerve will prove just as effective tonight. The amphitheatre always asks for imagination with space, sound, and scenery, and many weeks of hard work have hopefully risen to the challenge. It is, of course, also a venue that asks for a little faith in the elements—may the weather show more mercy than the hound.
To set the scene, the wild and windswept moor of Dartmoor lies waiting, Baskerville Hall stands full of secrets, and somewhere in the darkness something howls. Into this world step Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, summoned once again to untangle a case where superstition and reason collide. Beyond that, we place ourselves in their capable—if occasionally chaotic—hands, and invite you to enjoy the chase.
