When we say that the chapel is the heartbeat of our school what we mean is that, as a community of quite diverse beliefs and convictions, we all sense a pulse of energy whenever we gather in the chapel for worship. Every element resonates with us, both as individuals and corporately; whether it be the sharing of bread and wine, the harmony of singing together, the ringing of a bell or the flickering of a candle.

The Chapel is our sacred space, large enough to accommodate our whole community but intimate enough to touch each heart and stimulate each mind. In this sacred space earth meets with heaven and we are strangely warmed. In this space we are strengthened, week by week, in the Eucharist. In this space we remember, particularly in November during All Souls tide and on Remembrance Sunday; and then there are times of dedication when members of the King’s community are confirmed by the bishop, when couples enter holy matrimony, when children are baptised or when we bring our pets for a blessing on St Francis day.

Perhaps most wonderful of all is the ending of the productive Michaelmas term with the great joy of traditional carols and nine lessons followed by Christmas supper served by members of senior management. Then Christmas day, Saviour’s day, crowns the year as King’s families and friends crowd into the chapel to celebrate the nativity of our Lord.
