Why Athletics?

King's athletics aims to encourage the development of participating athletes, both technically and socially. Athletes of all abilities are actively encouraged to opt in and large numbers of our pupils take part in this element of the summer sports programme.

Both girls and boys are encouraged to participate in school teams and events, and specialist coaching is available in every discipline, including pole vault and hammer.

Chase Your Dreams ...

Athletics at King's enjoys an enviable reputation, with many of our athletes representing Somerset at the regional level and beyond.

A good number appear in national events and we have developed several national champions, some of whom have gained their international vests, including Ronnie Wells who ran the 100 metres at the English Schools, British Schools and UK Game events. Robin Danaher won the javelin event at the English Schools Championships and Freddie Thornhill is  following in his footsteps, whilst girls' event records are being rearranged by a promising group of junior girls. Abbie Stride is tackling the discus records, Rosie Thornhill the javelin and Lucy Crossman the middle distances, with Rosie and Abbie quietly challenging records set by a certain Maddie Hinch.

Former pupil Joe Cooke broke school records for the senior boys at high jump and triple jump as well as coming close in the long jump; all these had stood for over 30 years. The junior girls and junior boys also qualified for the regional finals of the Schools Cup. Sam Cobb continues to shine as an all-round athlete with many multi-sport international medals under his belt. Abby Hughes made splash on the race-walk scene and is now a British international in the 5km event.
