Attend Assessment

13+ Entry

After you register your child, they will be invited to attend the Headmaster's Assessment Day and their current school will be contacted to request a reference and school report. The assessment day is a mix of academic tests, an interview and activities. Pupils are welcome to spend the night in the boarding house to experience King’s College first-hand. Whilst some apprehension is only to be expected, we aim to make the day as enjoyable and positive as possible.

16+ Entry

After registration, candidates will be invited to attend an assessment and interview. Those who haven’t applied for a scholarship will complete two papers in the subjects they hope to study at A-level, a verbal reasoning paper and meet the Headmaster. The scholarship applicants sit two subject papers, a general assessment and a verbal reasoning paper, plus have a panel interview.

To embark on A-levels or a BTEC, pupils should have five grades 6 (or B) in GCSE/iGCSE and at least grades 4 (or C) in mathematics and English. In exceptional circumstances, the Headmaster may allow pupils to join the Sixth Form without achieving this hurdle, as long as motivation can be guaranteed. Such an arrangement would be reviewed termly. We strongly recommend pupils start A-levels having achieved a grade 7 (or A) GCSE/iGCSE in each of the subjects they have chosen, or in subjects similar to those they have chosen. In addition, pupils should not start mathematics or a science A-level without having achieved a grade 7 (or A) in mathematics.

Offer of a Place

Prep School

After your

13+ Entry

After your child has been assessed, we will contact you with either a ‘firm’ place at King’s College on condition of their assessment results, a satisfactory school report and successful completion of Year 8, or ‘waiting list’ place with the chance of a place emerging. Whilst Common Entrance does not determine whether or not a pupil gains entry, we still value the exams and results will be used for setting.

16+ Entry

Applicants are offered a conditional place based on an interview with the Headmaster at King’s College, which may be in the company of their parents, a reference from their current school Head (they will be contacted after registration) and predicted GCSE grades that meet the entry requirements.

Offers are sent in the post and emailed following the assessment days. Once you receive an offer, you have a month to complete the enclosed/attached acceptance form and pay your deposit. Your child's place is then secure and you will receive further information about starting at King's.

New Pupil Information and House Allocation

Pupils receive an email with a link to the School Portal that contains the information and administrative forms required before starting at King's. The Admissions team also confirms which house your child has been allocated and will let you know about the induction process.

Start of Term for New Pupils

New pupils normally arrive on a Sunday at the same time as existing boarders. Please look out for details regarding the start of year and induction during the summer.

New pupils and parents are able to spend time settling in before meeting the Headmaster and Houseparents. The Head of Third Form then runs an induction session and refreshments are served before parents depart.
