The (Virtual) Big Sleep Out
Every year, Arc (formerly Taunton Association for the Homeless) organises The Big Sleep Out to help raise awareness of homelessness in the town. The charity has been providing accommodation and support to homeless people for over 40 years.
This year, with life being that much different, people were encouraged to take part, but in their own gardens, in dens in their living rooms, in sheds, and all manner of indoor and outdoor spaces they own.
Led by our English teacher, Miss Forward, we encouraged our school community to get involved. Despite the weather leading up to the event, the rain held off ... for some (!), and saw a great number of pupils and parents, as well as staff, taking to a night under the stars.
We’ve heard from families across the world: from Russia; Kenya; France; and all over the UK. Some even slept in hammocks, some in treehouses, dens in the garden, on a balcony, and even in a bath!
So far we’ve managed to raise over £1100.
Commenting, Miss Forward said: “This has been the perfect opportunity to support a great local charity without having to leave home. Kings families set up their sleeping arrangements in a wide range of creative ways to help us imagine the experience of homelessness whilst raising a fantastic amount of money through sponsorship and donations."
