Last week we ran a series of events to raise awareness of Safer Internet Day, a day in which organisations across the UKinspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

On Tuesday, Geography teacher Abigail Shultz gave pupils a lecture on the importance of internet safety. As part of the talk, she played a video called ‘Connections’ put together by musician and educator, Christian Foley, who used his musical genius to spread the message of internet safety.

“The world has never been more connected,” he sings, “with a simple click; we can access a universe of various perspectives, no matter what the subject is. Be clever. Understand that what you do online has an impact in real life, real time.”

Following the lecture, the pupils completed an online survey on their internet habits, the results of which will be examined in future lessons. The Third Form were also given a talk by PC Tony Alderman, who advised pupils on the importance of internet safety and the dangers of cyber-bullying and sexting.

Each year, as part of the school’s PSHE module on “Bullying, Cyberbullying and Internet Safety,” Co-curricular Assistant, Steve Shaw, teaches pupils how to lock down their social media profiles.

As a Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Ambassador, he plays a vital role in spreading the message of online safety to King’s pupils.

As always, our PSHE noticeboard is updated regularly with relevant information about staying safe online, should pupils wish to learn more. Head of Safeguarding, Karen McSwiggan is also available to discuss issues privately with pupils.
