Music Composition Heralds the Emergence of Spring

Lockdown 3.0 sees new musical creativity blossoming across our music department. Pupils have been utilising technology to continue to hone and develop their skills, coming together remotely to connect and perform.

Key to a number of virtual collaborations is Sixth Form pupil Louis B, who has recently entered a competition to score the music for a short animation. The Film Scoring Competition With A Heart, run by Score Relief, is an appeal by The Cue Tube (a free-to-use platform for film composers, set up during the Covid-19 pandemic), to raise funds for the Backup Hardship Fund, which provides relief to technical workers from the events and entertainment industries.

The competition is free to enter, and comes with amazing prizes for composers, thanks to the generosity of a number of partners and sponsors. Besides the attraction of winning a prize, the competition offers a creative challenge at the same time as enabling participants to make a contribution, by way of a donated entry fee, to help those behind-the-scenes workers whose livelihoods have been affected by Covid-19.

The animation that requires an accompanying score follows a young girl and her dog as they perform the traditional rites to dispel winter, heralding the arrival of spring. Watch the animation and listen to Louis' fantastic entry here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8P1ZTj5Iag
