King’s College recorded a resounding 13-1 victory when they travelled to Sherborne School recently to play their first water polo match for many years.

As part of the school’s swimming and aquatics programme, King’s has resurrected the sport of water polo, with taster sessions and a two-week introductory programme held at the end of the 2017 Summer Term.

This year has seen the start of weekly sessions led by Somerset ASA and South West Regional Coach, Simon Tomlinson. The team started as a small group, from which the numbers have grown significantly.

Following a brief warm-up, King’s took the lead after just two minutes with a goal from Darren Banks. Mikhail Vtornikov later added to the score, resulting in 3-0 win at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the boys put in a great team performance to score an impressive five goals. Daneel Louw scored a brace, while Sergei Vtornikov secured his first goal. Darrenand Mikhail then added a further goal each.

In the third quarter, King’s deep-end goalkeeper, Sergei made a number of saves before succumbing to a clever shot. However, at the end of the quarter, the score read 11-1, thanks to further goals from Mikhail and Darren.

In the final quarter, despite increasing fatigue, the King’s team produced some great play, with Third Form pupil Tom Smith helping the visitors to add two further goals, both of which were scored by George Glanville, making it 13-1 at the final whistle.

Darren Banks was named Man of the Match.

Head of Swimming and Aquatics at King’s College, Lyndsey Hollands said: “It makes me so happy that we have built a team that played so well against Sherborne School. The boys were great, not only in the water, but as a team in general - which is all thanks to Simon Tomlinson. It’s an exciting and encouraging start to our water polo programme.”

The King’s squad: Darren Banks, Marcus Dennis, George Glanville, Daneel Louw, Tom Smith, Thomas Tsai, Mikhail Vtornikov, Sergei Vtornikov and Jimmy Yeung.
