King's Staff Selected to Play Representative Hockey

Four members of staff from King’s College, Taunton, are currently involved in playing representative hockey at regional and national levels.

Head of PE and Girls' Games Sara Similien and Director of Hockey Clare Hayes are no strangers to playing at this level, having gone through the trial stages to take part in previous national level competitions. Sara, playing for the Over 40s, won a bronze at the World Cup in 2018 beating the Netherlands in the bronze medal match. She also won a bronze at the Euros in 2017 beating Ireland in the bronze play off. Clare won a silver medal in the 2015 Masters World Cup in Australia, playing in the Over 40s tournament.

Sara Similien, who is Head of PE, is playing for West Masters Over 40s next weekend in the Woman’s Regional Hockey Finals at Cannock Hockey Club. She has also been selected for the England Over 40s who are playing in the Home Nations Tournament in London next month, and in the European Cup in Rotterdam in July.

Laura Bennett, is a Hockey Coach and Sports Letting Coordinator who played for the West Masters Over 35s in the Women’s Regional Hockey Finals at Basingstoke Hockey Club last weekend. The West Masters won all of their games, making them the Over 35 Champions.

Jonty Lawford, who is Deputy Head (Academic) has been selected to represent the England Hockey Over 45 squad for the 2019 season.The squad comprises 23 players, of which 18 will be selected to play in a home nations tournament in Glasgow in June, and in the European Championships in Holland this July.

Director of Hockey at King's, Clare Hayes, has been trialling for the England Over 45s since last year and has made the final 18 to play in the Home Nations at Southgate Hockey Club in June. In addition to this she will also play in the European Championships in Rotterdam in July.

Commenting on the selection of her colleagues to play representative hockey she said: “Our hockey philosophy at King’s incorporates hard work, persistence and enjoyment; all qualities that our coaching staff are also demonstrating in going on to play representative hockey at regional and national levels.”
