County Cricket Contract for Will
We're delighted to announce that Upper Sixth pupil Will Smeed has been awarded a two-year contract with Somerset County Cricket Club.
The highly talented 18 year old follows in the footsteps of several former King’s pupils who have gone on to play for Somerset in recent years, including Jos Buttler, Alex Barrow, Craig Meschede, Eddie Byrom, Tom Banton and Nathan Gilchrist.
Will is a top order batsman who joined King’s at the age of 13. Since joining he has shown himself to be one of the most exciting young talents on the local cricket scene, playing up through the Somerset age groups and being part of the Somerset Academy since 2016.
Will made his Somerset second XI debut at the age of 15 in 2017 and during the following season scored his maiden second XI century against Sussex, batting alongside Marcus Trescothick.
In addition to his prowess on the cricket field Will was awarded the Provost’s Prize as the top academic of his year group at our end of term prizegiving.
A clearly delighted Will said: “King’s College has played a huge part in helping me to get to where I am. They have got some great coaches and some brilliant facilities.
“King’s have supported me so well throughout with all the journeys to the county ground when I was younger. They have been flexible with my schooling and allowed me time to play cricket when I needed to, all of which has been very much appreciated and I can’t thank them enough.”
Our Director of Sport, Phil Lewis said: “It's always exciting to see one of our young cricketers signing a professional contract with Somerset.
“Will is the latest in a long line of King’s cricketers who have gone onto play professionally, which is testament to the success of the cricket programme that we have in place here. Will is also a great example of someone who has balanced his academic work brilliantly with a full on school and county cricket programme. Will also played other sports to a high level here which is something we firmly encourage in those pupils looking to make it to the top”
Phil added: “Will is an exceptional talent and we have high hopes that he will follow in the footsteps of Jos Buttler and Tom Banton in playing for England one day.”
