Move over John Williams, there’s a new composer in town! Third Form pupil Louis will be taking centre stage this month after securing a place in the final of FilmBath's FilmScore competition.

FilmScore is a unique contest that invites young musicians aged between 14 and 19 to compose an original score for one of a selection of short films. The winner will receive a tour of Real World Studios, as well as an introduction to industry professionals and their craft.

Louis is one of five shortlisted candidates whose scores will be presented to a panel of professional judges. This year’s guests include Alastair King, a British composer and conductor renowned for his work on Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Doctor Who.

The panel will also consist of Hutch Demouilpied, a UK based composer, sound designer and musician who has recently completed work on the 2016 feature film, The Levelling, as well as composer, performer and voice artist Lillian Henley, who has accompanied at the British Silent Film Festival, Barbican Centre, and the Cinema Museum in London.

Louis became involved in the competition after researching composition opportunities in the UK. His final piece, influenced by the drama of classical symphonic film scores and heavy rhythms, depicts the cyclical nature of night and day.

Further inspired by composers including Holst, Wagner and Stravinsky, as well as by the musical scores of John Williams and John Barry, Louis hopes to impress the judges with his musical masterpiece.

Louis said: “I was very excited when I heard, and I am most intrigued about how this could shape my future path.”

Director of Music, Colin Albery said: “Louis continually proves to be a talented and valued member of the music department. We wish him the best of luck in the competition.”

2018 has been quite the year for Louis, who was delighted to receive an offer to join the National Children's Orchestra last year. So far, he has attended regional rehearsals and is set to experience his first Main Orchestra meeting in the Easter holidays. He describes it as a “fantastic experience.”

We are all very proud of Louis here at King’s College and look forward to hearing the final result later this month.
