Carpenter House girls Abbie S and Lucie B recently completed a 20-mile walk around the King's Loop (a circuit of the school grounds) to raise money for Cancer Connections, a small charity based in the North East of England.

The girls purposely chose a smaller and unknown charity with a view to highlighting their cause – that many smaller charity groups are desperately in need of our support. With the school grounds presenting as the obvious place for a spot of fundraising, the girls covered 20 laps to complete their walk.

As it stands, they have raised in excess of a staggering £1500.

One of the cofounders of Cancer Connections, Deborah Roberts, said:

"The girls have just changed the lives of many cancer sufferers and their family support members. The money will go towards holistic and complimentary therapies and in supporting those who are recently isolated or bereaved."

She went on to say: "In our South Tyneside community, we rarely see younger people leading on raising money in this way. For two young people, who don't even know us but who wanted to help, is extremely inspirational. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts."

Commenting on their achievement, Housemistress, Laura Jones, said: "Lucie and Abbie should be extremely proud of the initiative they have shown in setting the challenge up and independently completing the walk, which took 6 hours and 13 minutes. Carpenter House celebrated the girls' achievement at the end of the day with a 'Bubble BBQ' in the garden."

This is another example of King's pupils using their initiative to make positive contributions to communities and those in need.
