  • “We offer a broad curriculum covering the full range of academic and creative subjects. Science, maths, and an award winning design technology department are amongst our strengths. ”
  • “They had nothing but praise! They particularly appreciate the positive and more personal relationships they have with teaching staff and the interest staff take in them advancing, the smaller class sizes, the opportunities on campus and the support they get. They highly value the palatable way in which subject matter is conveyed, the teaching resources used as well as the fast and effective way in which the school adapted to online learning. During Lent Term their siblings in German schools would have very little contact with teachers whilst they were able to follow all courses online – again they found it easy to access resources, and felt supported.”

Aims and Ethos

Aims and Ethos

King’s Hall School and King’s College are both small enough to be a family, yet large enough to perform at the highest level. We prize students’ achievements in sport, in the arts, and in the community no less than their academic successes. Above all we value their happiness and well-being. We like to think of ourselves as exceptionally happy schools, but also busy and purposeful communities. Our pupils leave us very well-qualified, but more importantly, they leave as well-rounded, balanced individuals.

Subject to availability both schools are able to offer some flexible boarding places. King's College offers a minimum of one year stay and King's Hall offers short stay boarding (from one month to one year).

  • “We follow a traditional curriculum, with challenging academic subjects prefered by universities, taught by teachers chosen for their deep knowledge of the subject and their infectious enthusiasm. 98% of pupils go on to university, many to Oxford, Cambridge and other international universities.”
  • “All pupils said that the culture of the school is welcoming and that pupils of many national backgrounds are integrated positively into the school environment.”

Why Choose Us?

Why Choose Us?

Both schools are exceptionally happy, thriving boarding and day schools situated in the county town of Taunton, the heart of Somerset. The town boasts good independent shopping and restaurants, as well as a theatre, museum, and cinema, and is the home of Somerset County Cricket, a popular destination in the summer months for T20 evening cricket matches.

The river Tone runs through the centre, where pupils have access to learn kayaking and rowing. Some of our senior pupils often use the river to practice for their Duke of Edinburgh canoe expeditions. The town has  many beautiful historic buildings, a wonderful park that hosts summer music concerts,  and all this is just five minutes drive from a number of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The power of nature cannot be underestimated, and our pupils have ample access to get outside into the fresh air, away from the hustle and bustle of the urban environment.

About Taunton
School Life

School Life

But the best possible academic results are just the start. Our aim is to engender wonder and excitement and an enthusiasm for learning, underpinned by the living community and the pastoral care within which our pupils feel safe, happy, loved and valued.

Our schools are special places for nurturing the spirit. Our approach is generous, outward-looking, caring and challenging: a lifelong foundation for success and personal fulfilment.

Boarding is a strong feature, which contributes to the real family atmosphere. The schools are small enough to be friendly and yet large enough to compete nationally. The outstanding modern facilities and stunning locations ensure that children enjoy a challenging all-round education in a progressive, secure and stimulating environment.

We celebrate diversity in a number of ways, and our international days, and our Chinese New Year celebrations offer the chance to learn about different cultures in an informal setting, often with the chance to sample traditional food.

  • “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for affording me the opportunity to experience life at your fantastic school. The exchange programme was tremendously enlightening and enriching. I am grateful to all the wonderful teachers and coaches at King's, who were so welcoming and accommodating. I already miss the camaraderie and the friends I made. ”

  • “We watched the weather unleash its full force on the UK from the comfort of Sky News. The challenges you faced as a school were not lost on us albeit our remote location. Modern technology enabled our sons to keep us posted via social media. We therefore wish to pass on our heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding level of commitment made by teachers and staff during this most testing time. This demonstrates the champion spirit of King's! As we would say in Kenya, this is true "Harambee" spirit!”

Enrichment Programme

Enrichment Programme

As with all Woodard schools, great emphasis is placed on developing the individual: kindness, consideration, courtesy and respect for one another are fundamental to the ethos of the schools. A good work ethic and small class sizes help sustain progress, and specialist teaching is the norm.

We aim to identify the natural ability in every child, developing special, well-balanced, confident people through activities such as music, performing arts, sport, Leiths School of Food and Wine, Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Weekend cultural trips are also organised each term along with other social events that your child would be able to participate in.

Pupils will work in small groups, pairs or one-to-one, and are helped to maximise their performance in GCSE and A level exams, whilst securing Cambridge ESOL certificates (PET, FCE and IELTS).
