Maddie Hinch Scholarship
This scholarship was created to celebrate the success of our former pupil and Olympic gold medalist, Maddie Hinch. We award this to a hockey player, male or female, field or goalkeeper, who demonstrates desire and potential.
Watch below as Maddie talks about her passion for MH1 coaching.
Why Play Hockey?
We are very much focused on the individual, helping them to be the best they can be; whether that is a top international player; someone who wants to play a good standard of club hockey; or someone who just wants to play for fun.
In order to create the right environment, we need the right coaches. Our coaches are passionate about hockey and we match coaches to the squads, to get the right balance. We also offer specialist goalkeeper training. With a variety of coaching experience, our staff have coached nationally and as part of the England Hockey Performance Centres.
There are four senior girls' squads and four senior boys' squads.
We then have an A and B team for the U14 and U15 players ( A and B boys' and A and B girls' squads).
The coaching is progressive, and excellence, when and where appropriate, is pursued.
We coach according to the England Hockey Coaching Philosophy, which helps if players wish to progress through the England Hockey Player Pathway.
Individuals are encouraged to seek representative honours in the England Hockey Single System and are thoroughly supported throughout. Tours are undertaken on a regular basis.
All players will train on Tuesdays and Thursdays with an additional training session available on Wednesdays.
Players can also have access to additional training on Mondays and Fridays.
We offer specialist hockey strength and conditioning (S&C) sessions.
We have a varied and competitive fixtures programme for all our players, whether they play in the first squad, the fourth squad, A or B squad.
We enter U14, U16 and U18 National Schools competitions for boys and girls (outdoor) and U16 and U18 (indoor).
We also run regular holiday camp programmes to which all are very welcome.
Broad Spectrum of Experience
To try to give our players a rich experience, we regularly take trips to the National Indoor Finals and the a number of international hockey fixtures.
We invite guest coaches to school. Recently these have include Tom Casson, Simon Mantell, Crista Cullen and Susannah Townsend – all of whom shared their international playing experiences on the pitch.
We also organise tours to ensure our players experience hockey in its entirety. Past tours have visited The Netherlands, and Jamaica.
Director of Hockey
Our Director of Hockey is Clare Hayes.
Clare lives and breathes hockey and currently plays for England Hockey O45s, having competed and won medals in many international competitions, including the World Cup and European Championships, and most recently a bronze at the 2019 Europeans.
Prior to joining King's, Clare taught various age groups, from PE at West Somerset Community College, and in primaries schools working for SASP, through to foundation degree level at Richard Huish College.
Clare has extensive hockey coaching experience: she is an England Hockey Level 4 Coach, and an England Hockey Performance Centre Lead Coach; she works for England Hockey as a Coach Developer; has been an Assistant Coach for the England U16 Girls, and was Lead Coach for hockey, training the England squad for the UK School Games.
Clare grew up in Taunton and was a regular competitor on the local show jumping circuit ... when not playing hockey!
She is currently working on a Professional Doctorate in Elite Coaching Practice.
Dave Jessep has recently completed his Advanced Coach Programme from England Hockey having already finished his Level 2 in 2013. He has been involved in the England Player Pathway programme over the last 10 years, coaching various age groups across all levels including Futures Cup, HiPac and Performance Centre. He has recently taken over the manager positions with England U16 Boys and is involved in the England Age Group programmes.
Laura Bennett is one of our hockey coaches who graduated from the Great Britain Advanced Coach programme and holds an England Hockey Level 2 Coaching Qualification and Level 1 Umpire. She is the Lead Coach at the Taunton Girls' England Hockey Performance Centre and has coached at the England Hockey HiPac, as well as managing at the England Hockey Futures Cup. In addition Laura coaches within the Somerset Player Pathway, delivering hockey in the Development Centres and Academy Centres. Laura delivers our hockey programme within school, working with both the girls' and boys' teams and across multiple age groups.
Our facilities include two state-of-the-art sand-dressed artificial turf pitches, opened in December 2009 by Simon Mantel (England and GB) and former pupil Maddie Hinch (England and GB U21). Each pitch has six goals to ensure we can make the most of our facilities when training.
We also have a video tower to offer video analysis and tag fixtures and players.
These fantastic facilities enable us to host county and regional tournaments, as well being an England Hockey Performance Centre.
We host other hockey clubs, hockey events and West Masters hockey events.
Camps and Sporting Opportunities at King's
As part of our broader offer, we run day and residential camps for players at various ages and all levels of ability.
We also run additional hockey academy sessions throughout the year.
