Drama

There are many different opportunities and ways to get involved with drama at King's, as well as studying it as an academic subject.  There are performances of one kind or another every single term, and not just in the theatre but in various venues around and outside the school.  Our ethos is to get as many people as involved as possible and our main aim is enjoyment, both in the taking part, and a feeling of achievement when a job is well done.  Taking part does not just mean acting either, and it is our policy that as many backstage positions are taken by pupils as possible.  Experience is not needed, enthusiasm is all that is required, and full training is given whatever role you are taking.

Ours is a working theatre at the heart of our community, and pupils are actively encouraged to take part in its day-to-day running, and learn new skills.  We try to offer a wide variety of performances to take part in, for example this year there has been a large-scale musical Les Miserables, small pupil-directed plays in the House Drama Festival, and classic drama in Much Ado About Nothing.  Pupils are encouraged to produce their own projects as well, and all year groups can audition for plays and musicals.

We are very proud of our record of success, and performances are very well attended.  An independent reviewer at the Somerset Gazette had this to say of our recent production of Les Miserables:  'The best school performance in my 30 years of watching them - such was the production of Les Miserables at Taunton's King's College.  Clever staging paid homage to the grandiosity of the professional shows whilst costume, lighting, special effects and even the programme were superb … A highly polished performance by incredibly talented youngsters, culminating in a rousing finale which had the audience enveloped in emotion."
