“You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.”
- Michael Phelps
At King’s we have a comprehensive Swimming and Aquatics programme, providing opportunities for pupils to enjoy the water throughout school life, whether it be social, recreational, competitive or PE oriented.
Swimming takes place in our 25m, 5 lane pool, which is 1.1m deep in the shallow end and 2.8m in the deep end, thereby facilitating other aquatic activities such as water polo, scuba diving and synchronized swimming.
The type of swimming on offer varies during the year, and swimming is available in all of the options for both GCSE and A level PE. All Third Form pupils go through basic stroke technique work to help them to swim more efficiently and enjoy their swimming more.
Test the Water
Swimming is a vital life skill and completely necessary for pupils wishing to take part in other water-based activities outside of the pool environment, such as sailing and kayaking. At King’s we ensure all pupils complete a water safety test and will provide additional tuition for those who require lessons.
Lessons are also available to anyone who wishes to gain more confidence in the water and learn basic movement skills.
For pupils who wish to swim recreationally, space is always allocated during programmed sessions.
Competitive Swim Training
For those who are serious swimming competitors, progressive squad training is delivered by our Head of Swimming and during the Michaelmas Term, training is focused on developing aerobic fitness, improving stroke technique and introducing pace.
In the Lent and Summer Terms we focus on maintaining aerobic fitness and developing race skills and developing speed. Training takes place during games sessions and additional early morning swim training is offered twice weekly. This is often a popular choice for pupils as it does not clash with other sports commitments and provides pupils an opportunity to develop their swimming alongside other sports.
Competitions and Galas
Each year, King’s pupils have the opportunity to compete in galas against other local schools and for first the time in March 2017, King’s will be entering a team into the prestigious Bath and Otter Cup. This is an exciting and traditional competition against independent schools across the country, held at the London 2012 Aquatic Centre.
In addition, King’s competes in the annual Meade King Cup, which is the longest running unbroken competition in the world between independent schools.

During the Michaelmas Term, taster sessions of water polo are offered for boys and girls. Water polo is a fantastic game that combines speed, strength, and stamina, with great teamwork and tactics.
Additional sessions are integrated into the swim programme during Lent and Summer Terms, with fixtures planned for the summer.
Synchronised and Fitness Swimming
Synchronised swimming is new to the programme at King’s. Taster sessions take place during Michaelmas Term. Synchronised swimming is a challenging sport that combines endurance, flexibility and finesse with style – all to music! It is an excellent opportunity for pupils to try something different and aims to encourage more people to be active.
Throughout the year, various fitness swim sessions are offered that provide new and innovative ways for pupils to enjoy the many benefits that swimming can bring.
King’s Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity to gain their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. This is an industry recognised qualification that gives pupils the skills and knowledge to perform the roles and responsibilities of a lifeguard.
This includes; the ability to affect a rescue, safely supervise a session, provide first aid and CPR. This qualification is an excellent entry route into the leisure industry and a great opportunity for our pupils.
2017 will see the start of an exciting new venture for King’s. As part of our overall swimming and aquatics development, and our commitment to providing excellent services to not only our pupils, but friends of King’s and members of the local community, we are pleased to launch King’s Community Swimming.
The first part of this project will begin with the launch of the Community Learn to Swim Programme and King’s will provide high quality swimming lessons for local children.
Initially, lessons will take place on a Wednesday afternoon and will provide opportunities for children aged 4-11 to learn to swim or further develop their skills.
Intensive Swimming and Aquatics
As part of the community swimming brand, intensive courses for swimming, water polo, and synchronised swimming will be on offer during half term.
Intensive courses provide swimmers with an accelerated learning experience and with water polo and synchronised swimming also on offer, they will be of great benefit to children and young people in the local community.
FloatFit is the latest addition to our Swimming and Aquatics programme. We currently have a number of staff who are qualified in teaching the fun, low impact water workout, and look forward to making this a real feature in 2019.
Our FloatFit sessions provide pupils with an alternative aquatic activity - giving some cross training opportunities, but also a new way in which to encourage and engage those who may not usually engage well with traditional sports and activities.
