“You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.”
- Michael Phelps
At King’s we have a comprehensive Swimming and Aquatics programme, providing opportunities for pupils to enjoy the water throughout school life, whether it be social, recreational, competitive or as part of the PE timetable.
We have a fantastic 25m, 5 lane pool, which is 1.1m deep in the shallow end and 2.8m in the deep end, thereby facilitating other aquatic activities such as water polo, scuba diving, kayaking, lifesaving and synchronized swimming.
Various swimming and aquatics activities are available throughout the year. In the Third Form, all pupils have swimming lessons as part of their PE programme, and swimming is available as an individual sport option for those taking GCSE or A level PE.
Test the Water
Swimming is a vital life skill and completely necessary for pupils wishing to take part in other water-based activities outside of the pool environment, such as sailing and kayaking. At King’s we ensure all pupils complete a water safety test and will provide additional tuition for those who require more confidence and practice.
For pupils who wish to swim recreationally, space is always allocated during programmed sessions.
Competitive Swim Training
For those who are serious swimmers, progressive squad training is delivered by our Head of Swimming and during the Michaelmas Term, training is focused on developing aerobic fitness, improving stroke technique and introducing pace.
In the Lent and Summer Terms we focus on maintaining aerobic fitness and developing race skills and developing speed. Training takes place during games sessions and additional early morning swim training is offered twice weekly. This is often a popular choice for pupils as it does not clash with other sports commitments and provides pupils an opportunity to develop their swimming alongside other sports.
Further training sessions are available through our King's Community Swimming Academy programme, giving our pupils the opportunity to access an additional six hours of weekly training.
Competitions and Galas
Each year, King’s pupils have the opportunity to compete in galas against other local schools and clubs.
In March this year we entered a team into the prestigious Bath and Otter Cup, an exciting and traditional competition against independent schools across the country, held at the London Aquatic Centre, home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In addition, King’s competes in the annual Meade King Cup, which is the longest running unbroken competition in the world between independent schools.
New for 2019
This year we will be hosting a series of time trials, open to any King's College and King's Hall pupils. They will be able to select their event and challenge themselves against the clock!

Water polo is a fantastic game that combined speed, strength, and stamina, with great teamwork and tactics.
The sport is evolving rapidly at King's, with training offered weekly for both girls and boys. We have a competitive boys' team, comprising boys across all year groups, who compete against local schools.
We work closely with our local club, Taunton Deane Water Polo, and many of our pupils compete for the club, as well as for Somerset County, representing the South West region.
We are very proud of current Fourth Form pupil Nyah Tomlinson, who is part of the England National Academy Programme. Nyah travels the length and breadth of the country, training and competing at this level. This summer she will visit Hungary with the England U15 girls' squad for an intensive week of training and matches.
Each year our Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity to gain their Royal Lifesaving Society National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). This is a nationally and internationally recognised qualification, and is an excellent gateway into a career in the sport and leisure industry, enabling candidates to work as a lifeguard in swimming pools and leisure centres across the world.
This formal qualification covers all elements of swimming safety, pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, first aid and CPR.
This course is offered at a very discounted rate to our pupils, and is delivered by our Head of Swimming and Aquatics. As part of this offer, our pupils then volunteer as lifeguards to supervise regular swim sessions in our pool, gaining valuable work experience.
Scuba diving is another exciting activity available to our pupils. We work in partnership with a local dive centre, Scuba Blue, and each year their qualified and experienced staff provide ‘Try-dives’ for our pupils. Try-dives take place at our pool and give our pupils the opportunity to try diving. They learn how to use equipment, are taught basic safety guidelines, and learn the skills needed to dive.
If pupils enjoy this experience, they can sign up to complete their the PADI Open Water Dive Certificate. The course is delivered at school, taught by divemasters from Scuba Blue, with the final open water assessments taking place at a local open water dive centre. Once qualified, pupils will have this qualification for life and will be able to dive all over the world!
