Cricket v Millfield
The 1st XI enjoyed a memorable and historic victory at home. We started well with Nathan Smith taking two early wickets, and a tidy performance in the field including two run-outs restricted Millfield to 231 for 8 in their 50 overs. With Jos Buttler and Alex Barrow back in the pavilion with the score on 66 we looked vulnerable, but Nick Evans (69) and Craig Meschede (100 not out) took control and batted with maturity and class. Batting first the 2nds managed 136 for 8, George Wayman top scoring with 34. Charlie Close's early strike created much excitement, but their middle order secured victory.
Olly Mason bowled with fire for the 3rds, after Millfield raced off at over seven an over. Chris Griffiths took 4 for 11 to restrict Millfield to 152, while in reply Tom Garwood showed defiance and Olly Mason batted gutsily to hit 33, but their bowling was too strong really. The 4ths got off to a flying start with a brilliant left-handed catch by Will Smith, eventually bowling out Millfield for 164. Olly Harris and George Hall launched a recovery after we were 13 for 4, but the target was always just out of reach.
The Junior Colts restricted Millfield to 200, Ivo Gavin the pick of the bowlers. After a disastrous first six overs we battled back through Ollie Gibb, Ivo Gavin and Richard Turner, who hit two huge sixes, but it was too little too late. The Bs started steadily but then unfortunately lost their way, being bowled out for 48. Despite excellent bowling from George Bayless and Lewis Morris, our total was never really enough.
The Under 14s lost to stronger opposition, as did the Bs, but the Cs put in a good team performance. Jack Ferguson (40) and Tristan Drew put the side back on track after early setbacks, while Duncan Hanson and Henry Overhill put on a tremendous last-wicket stand to take our total to 99, but a strong Millfield batting line-up never really looked in trouble.
