Cricket v King's Bruton

The 1st XI season started in sensational fashion. The day belonged to our two opening batsmen Jos Buttler and Alex Barrow, who batted for 49.3 overs to set up a record opening partnership at King's of 340 runs. Jos tore the Bruton bowling apart, his 227 not out including 25 fours and 8 sixes. He was ably supported by 5th former Alex Barrow, who played some fine shots, and was unlucky to be dismissed in the final over for 95. To add to our fine display with the bat, we bowled Bruton out for 65, Nathan Smith taking 4 for 26 and Ross Chadwick 3 for 7, winning our first game of the season by an astonishing 277 runs.

Put into bat, the 2nds reached 175, with good performances from several batsmen. Ed Kean top-scored with a well-crafted 47, George Lock impressed with his 26, and Ben de Figueiredo and Charlie Close batted well to see us to a satisfying final total. Good fielding by George Lock especially and aggressive bowling by Harry Canning kept the opposition to 111 for 5, though strangely under Bruton's rules this goes down as a limited overs draw. The 3rds bowled loosely at first, and allowed Bruton to reach 213, Luke Gavin the pick of our bowlers with 3 for 30. We found the going tough at first, though Oli Davies (36) and Jack Graham (45) saw us to 150.

The Junior Colts enjoyed a dominant win, taking just 16 overs to bowl out Bruton for 46, Taylor Buller taking four wickets and Dominic Bracher two, with great catches by Will Walters and Chris Griffiths. In reply we lost two early wickets, but Dominic Bracher and George Wayman saw us home comfortably. The Bs game was cancelled by Bruton.

The Under 14s dismissed Bruton for 121, James Dent taking 3 for 29 and James Jennings conceding just four runs from six overs. In a determined, purposeful batting display, Todd Barrett's 38 and Dan Benson's 28 saw us home with 14 overs to spare. A mixture of our Bs and Cs played Bruton's Bs - batting first, some hard hitting by Joe Williams and good running by Jack Williams towards the end of the innings was overshadowed by man of the match Charlie Marshall who scored 41 and took 3 for 2 as Bruton subsided to 36 for 8 in their allotted 25 overs.
