Pupils celebrate A Level results
Pupils and staff at King’s College are celebrating a superb set of A Level results. The school has achieved one of its best ever performances, with 63% of subjects passed at A or B grade, an increase of 10% on last year.
The English Department performed especially well, with 79% of pupils achieving A or B grades. Modern Languages (French, German and Spanish) were also very successful, with 78% of pupils getting A or B grades. Other high achieving departments include Design Technology with 91%, Drama with 86%, Music with 100% and Business Studies with 72% at A or B. King’s, one of the few schools with a Classics Department which still offers Greek and Latin, is also delighted with a 100% A and B standard in those subjects.
Amy Higgs has excelled with four A grades in Biology, Chemistry, English and French. Amy’s results are even more impressive viewed in light of her commitments to other areas of life at King’s, including singing in the choir and playing in the school orchestra. Alexandra Wynn, winner of the Taunton Young Musician of the Year 2008, has also achieved excellent results, with A grades in Music and English and a B for German. Head Boy, Martin Zacherl, achieved four As in German, Greek, Latin and Business Studies. Martin will now go on to study Classics at Oxford University.
Josh Brooksbank, Elliott Marchent, James Sinclair and Henry Drysdale, the four members of the band The Locarnos, an indie rock group who performed on Glastonbury’s BBC Introducing Stage this year, managed to balance their musical commitments, including performances on Radio One, with hard academic work and collectively achieved six A grades, six B grades and one C grade.
Headmaster, Mr Richard Biggs, said: “I am delighted with these very strong results and congratulate the King’s pupils for their outstanding efforts. They have worked hard over the past two years, ably supported by dedicated and talented staff. We are pleased that the high-flyers have done so well, but also just as excited about the pupils who have raised their game and turned D’s in to C’s or C’s into B’s. Our results are even more impressive when you consider that we are not an academic hothouse and that all these pupils were heavily involved in a wide range of other activities. In fact I have no doubt that the busier pupils are the better they do in their academic studies. Because of this breadth of experience they emerge with all the skills and attitudes they need to flourish as they move on from King’s.”
Very importantly, the great majority of the Sixth Form leavers have gained the grades they need to enter their university of choice.
King’s College, along with many other excellent schools in the UK such as Eton, Marlborough, Winchester and St. Paul’s, has decided not to participate in national newspaper league tables this year. The results will be published in full on the school website.
King’s College is holding an Open Day on Saturday 4th October. Please contact the Admissions Registrar Mrs Barbara Lancey for further details: 01823 328204.
