Cricket v Clifton
Because of a waterlogged pitch, the 1st XI game was moved to a dry King's, and at Clifton's request, the three senior teams were reduced to a single Under 17 fixture. Clifton were soon in trouble due to some effective bowling by our two openers, and things only got worse for them when first-change bowlers Miles Lenygon (an excellent 2 for12) and, something of a surprise, Jos Buttler (3 for 27) reduced them to 60 for 6. A few useful partnerships allowed them to reach 142 for 9 in their 30 overs. After losing an early wicket, Ed Walker (39) and Calvin Smith (42) steadied the ship, and momentum was maintained by Alex Barrow (22) and Jos Buttler (25 not out) hitting the winning runs in the 29th over, in a slightly more familiar role. The Under 14s bowled and caught well, with Will Walters and Milo Reynolds bowling particularly well at the death to restrict Clifton to 119 for 6. After a steady start, we suffered a mini-collapse, but Jamie Grantham and Chris Griffiths did superbly to put us back in the hunt. Needing seven off the last over, we managed only five, to lose by just a single run. The Bs recorded an excellent victory against previously unbeaten opposition. Ichikawa Hikaru scored 24 off 6 balls in our 124 all out, and Nick Mason took 5 for 12, helping to bowl Clifton out for just 41.
