Justin Langer at King's
Australian opening batsman Justin Langer was at King's last week, and treated a large crowd of onlookers to a masterful display of batting.Langer, one of the world's top batsmen, has been signed by Somerset as their overseas player for July and August, and was getting a taste of English conditions on his arrival in this country.
Dennis Breakwell, our outstanding head groundsman and former Somerset star himself, rigged up netting around a strip on the 1st XI cricket square, for Langer and his new teammates to practise on.
He batted for over an hour against Andy Caddick and South African test bowler Charl Willoughby amongst others, and was heard to say to Caddick what a brilliant batting surface it was. Many of our own young cricketers sat and watched during their lunch break, and enjoyed a feast of attacking shots, as well as intense concentration on getting feet and head in the right place.
"It was a tremendous experience for our lads," said head of cricket Andy Jones. "The work ethic of Langer and his teammates was really impressive."
