Cricket v Lord Wandsworth
Our under 15 cricketers are through to the last sixteen of a major national schools competition. As last year's county champions, they are representing Somerset in the national stages of the Lord's Taverners Cup, which culminates in a grand final staged at Trent Bridge in July.
Having already defeated Poole Grammar School by 83 runs early in the season, they faced Lord Wandsworth College last week on the King's 1st XI square. King's won the toss and soon lost three quick wickets, having chosen to bat.
But then an outstanding undefeated century by Jersey-born Ben de Figueiredo, supported ably by Ed Kean, put King's in a strong position. Ben finished on 109 not out off just 100 balls, in a spectacular display of stroke-making. A late flourish from Charlie Close (32) enabled King's to close on 216 for 5.
Two early strikes by Ross Chadwick immediately put Lord Wandsworth College on the back foot. However impressive partnerships for the 3rd and 4th wickets started to threaten. But once these partnerships had been broken, the pressure to score increased and wickets fell at regular intervals.
The visitors were eventually bowled out for 169, Tom Jennings finishing with 4 for 26, James Scanlan 3 for 25 and Ross Chadwick 2 for 13. King's won by 47 runs and are now just three matches away from a date at Trent Bridge in July.
