Scholarships
For entry aged 13
Art
King's College offers art scholarships to suitably gifted candidates. Pupils will be expected to visit the school and to bring a portfolio of their work. Candidates must be prepared to take the art and design course to GCSE level. All candidates will be given an individual interview.
Design and technology
King's College offers design and technology scholarships to candidates who can demonstrate a flair for this subject. All applicants will be invited to visit the school for an individual interview where they will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their ability within this field. We would also expect candidates to bring a selection of both their design and practical work to the interview. Candidates must be prepared to take the design and technology course to GCSE level.
Drama
Auditions for entry into the 3rd form are held in the Lent term and for 6.1 in the Michaelmas term, and details can be obtained from the school office. The audition consists of a two-minute audition piece chosen by the candidate, and participation in a group exercise as well as formal interviews. As well as demonstrating skill and careful rehearsal in their piece, creative teamwork and a commitment to drama are the key requisites. Drama scholars are expected to take drama as an academic subject until at least GCSE, take part in productions, and attend a scholars' programme of training and events.
Music
King's College offers a number of music scholarships and awards each year as a result of auditions and interviews held in February. The scholarships and awards include free instrumental tuition on two instruments. All awards may be increased by a bursary in cases of financial need.
Candidates should normally have Grade V in their first instrument. They should prepare two contrasting pieces, and they will also be tested in sight-reading and aural: it is an advantage to be able to offer singing or a second instrument.
The scholarships are for boys and girls of outstanding ability. Smaller awards are offered to candidates who maybe have not yet achieved scholarship standard, but who show real musical potential, and some preference will be given to those who have had experience in cathedral choirs.
Candidates are encouraged to visit the school at least once before the auditions, when they can take the opportunity to play informally to the Director of Music and be shown round by some of the school’s musicians.
A candidate who performs well in more than one of the competitions may be given a Barrow Scholarship which recognises all-round excellence or a Barrow Award for good all-round potential.
