Football triumph for our girls

Our Under 16 girls' football team have won the South West Independent Schools Girls Football Competition, held at King's on the second weekend of the Michaelmas term. After a nervous start in the first group match against Leweston, Erin Slade led the team with passion and skill, scoring all four of our goals in a convincing win. The next game was against Cheltenham Ladies College, the competition favourites, and a physically much larger side than us. In a tight game that ended 0-0, Erin Slade sustained a bad injury to her wrist and had to be taken to casualty. With no substitutes to fill her place, we were indebted to Charlie Webb who stepped in at the last minute to great effect.

We won two more of our qualifying games with excellent goals by Ellie McLean and Penny Guest, which took us into a semi-final against Exeter School. Flora Cohen and Penny Guest linked together with some fine passing movements to help us win 2-1, and book us a place in the final, where our opposition was once again Leweston.

Milly Bramble was a rock in defence, while Alia Hamaoui dominated the game with some aggressive tackling at centre-back. The game finished 0-0 and we faced a dramatic penalty shoot out. Ellie McLean, Penny Guest and Alia Hamaoui all scored with convincing penalties, to take us into sudden death! Alia pulled off a great save, leaving it to Erin Slade, just back from casualty, to score the winning penalty, and secure the most dramatic victory imaginable!
