Rugby v King's Bruton
Conditions never allowed the 1st XV to convert pressure and possession into points, though an early try by Henry Cunningham and two just before half-time from Ed Dawson and Sam Warren in effect sealed the match. The season was rounded off with a classic try - from a great line-out take by Harry Brimacombe, Will McKegney burst two tackles, off-loading to James Scanlan who held the defence and put Charlie Clyde-Smith into space. He turned it back inside to Jos Buttler who gave the scoring pass to left-wing Ed Walker. The captain's touchline conversion was the perfect way to end an outstanding season.Playing uphill against the elements, the 2nds had to survive pressure from a spirited Bruton side who scored first. Soon afterwards man of the match Grant Little crossed the line, and with the forwards driving well close to ruck and maul, tries followed for Ollie Davies and skipper Henry Potter. Ben de Figueiredo rounded off a fine season, scampering 50 metres from the base of a ruck to score. The 3rds too managed to cap a tremendous season with a 17-0 victory.
The Senior Colts won comfortably by 37-0, and the Junior Colts' game was equally one-sided, with some extremely pleasing passages of support play between backs and forwards. Good tries were scored from quick first-phase ball, and the backs showed slick hands and good passing skills.
The Under 14s put in a superb performance, rucking magnificently against a bigger pack. The backs exploited this excellent platform, with wingers Walsh and Griffiths scoring seven tries between them. Such a convincing win against one of the strongest sides Bruton have had for some while is a mark of the progress made by this team who promise much for King's rugby in the future. The Bs had one of those afternoons when everything they tried paid off, with some slick off-loads and good handling skills. A winning margin of 81 points shows just what this team is capable of in the future!
