Melville trained as a chartered accountant with Peat Marwick Mitchell. On leaving accountancy, he has been, in various guises, a corporate advisor to the financial services sector, in particular to the Fund Management industry, with Cazenove, Merrill Lynch and PwC. He has semi-retired but he remains a non-executive director of the Association of Investment Companies (and chairs the audit committee), the trade body of the closed end fund industry, and of an off-shore Fund Administrator.
He is a non-executive director of Falcon Rural Housing which provides affordable housing to local people in West Somerset, Taunton Deane and North Devon. He is a member of the development committee of Policy Exchange, a charitable Westminster based non-partisan think tank on public policies.
His spare time is occupied with interests in Natural History, Gardening, Woodlands, Dry fly fishing, Shooting and Philately.
