Meynell Alfred Show

Boys and girls from King Alfred and Meynell Houses clubbed together to perform their annual musical revue, now in its 15th year. The show has raised thousands of pounds for a diverse range of charities, with the pupils selecting one local and one national charity every year. The pupils' aim is to support as great a range of charities as possible.

This year the charities chosen were the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RLNI) and Taunton's Open Door Project for the homeless. King Alfred House chose the RLNI as their adopted charity as many of the boys are from coastal areas or spend leisure time in Devon and Cornwall. The boys were struck by the hard work and dedication of the lifeboat crews and wanted to do something to help this voluntary organisation. They also plan to take part later in the year in the RLNI's SOS day which is their official fund raising day. The girls of Meynell House chose Taunton's Open Door Project in an effort to do something positive for local people in need.

The revue was a huge success and all involved thoroughly enjoyed every minute. There was a varied programme of entertainment, led, directed and choreographed by pupils, including a video of 'King's School Musical', song and dance routines, a very entertaining mime of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and many well-known sketches from Armstrong and Miller and Monty Python. Even the teachers took part, with director of drama Alistair Wood and music teacher Jennie Morris leading a rendition of the Dirty Dancing number 'I had the time of my life'.

Housemistress Gerri Fagan said "Once again we are really proud of what our pupils have achieved. Everything related to the show from designing the programme to backstage and lighting is organised and executed by them, and it is to their credit that once more the revue has been a resounding success. We are very proud of their efforts".
