Science Weekend
Some of the world's leading scientists were lecturing and taking workshops at King's during this year's Science Weekend. Professor Mike Majerus is Professor of Evolution at Cambridge University, as well as President of the Amateur Entomologists' Society and a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. A leading authority on evolution, he delivered a lecture entitled 'The Peppered Moth: A Proof of Darwinian Evolution'.Professor Tim Naylor spoke on 'Steps from the Big Bang to Life on Earth'. He is Professor of Astrophysics at Exeter University, and is currently undergoing a study of the global structure of star formation regions, what could be termed 'stellar archaeology'.
On the Saturday, Dr Remy Ware from the Department of Genetics and Evolution at Cambridge University brought along live British ladybirds for identification, and discussed the impact of invasive species on British wildlife. Professor Naylor looked at the possibility of life on other planets, and Professor Majerus spoke on 'what it is like to be a full-time naturalist'.
Our 6th form scientists found all the lectures and workshops incredibly professional and inspiring, and gained a hugely valuable insight into the life of a university scientist. Much credit is due to Amy Higgs and Leilani Chan for organising the workshops.
