History department trip

Nine sixth form pupils embarked on a history department trip to Florence just before the beginning of the Lent term, to learn more about the Italian Renaissance and see some of the finest examples of art from this period.  In two and a half days they visited some eight churches, designed by the great architects of the day such as Filippo Brunelleschi.  They also visited various great art galleries.

The highlights of the trip were the Botticelli paintings in the Uffizi gallery, Michelangelo's David, Masaccio's Trinity, Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel as well as the Duomo itself, which the group climbed into and on top of for the ultimate Brunelleschi experience!  The A Level historians were lucky enough to be guided and inspired by a real art historian, who was once Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures, who made the whole experience of looking at art and architecture come to life.  It was an action-packed adventure into the beauty of Italian Renaissance art, and everybody enjoyed the experience tremendously.
