Oxbridge success

The English department has particular grounds for celebrating the arrival of this year's Oxbridge results, as three of its pupils have realised their ambition to continue their English studies at the university of their choice: Tom Elphinstone has received an unconditional offer from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, James Walker an unconditional offer from Queens' College, Cambridge, and Caroline Tecks a conditional offer from St John's College, Cambridge.

"In this increasingly competitive environment we are delighted at the success of these extremely talented individuals, each of whom will also make a very valuable contribution to life beyond their academic studies," said Oxbridge co-ordinator at King's Mick Polley.

All three pupils have exciting travel plans prior to taking up their place. James will teach English in north-east India, Caroline hopes to teach in Africa, and as part of a voluntary placement with Africa and Asia Venture Tom will teach in a rural school in Kenya.

Headmaster Mr Christopher Ramsey said "We are delighted that three of our best candidates have been recognised in this increasingly competitive environment - three Oxbridge places from one department is particularly impressive! With King's once again top of the government's league tables for Somerset, ahead of all our local rivals, we're pretty confident that this kind of academic accolade will be increasingly common in future years."
