Sarah in national orchestra

A young violinist from King's has just heard that she's won a place in the National Youth Strings Academy. 16-year old Sarah Hill from Merriott near Crewkerne received the news last week after auditioning for the highly sought-after orchestra at the beginning of January.

The National Youth Strings Academy is the string orchestra equivalent of the National Youth Orchestra, and offers the very highest standards of coaching from a dedicated team of professional musicians, three of whom are former principal players with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

There are two week-long courses this year, one at Easter and one in the summer, following which the orchestra is due to tour San Francisco.

Sarah started learning the violin at the age of 6, and won a major music scholarship to King's Hall. This continued through to King's College, where she has just started her sixth form studies, taking Music A Level along with History, English and Drama.

"It was quite a tough audition," said Sarah, "but I'm really looking forward to playing with some of the top musicians in the country, and of course to the trip to San Francisco! It's going to cost something like £2000 though, which will mean a lot of fund-raising. So if there are any generous sponsors out there!"

Director of Music at King's, Colin Albery, said "We're all absolutely delighted for Sarah. It's a great honour for her and for the school. She's one of a whole number of really talented musicians we have at King's at the moment, which makes it possible for us to put on some really ambitious projects."
